Begin using Nicorette or NicoDerm CQ on your quit day. It is ok if you slip up and have a cigarette, forgive yourself and stop at that one cigarette. Throw out your cigarettes, continue using Nicorette or NicoDerm CQ and continue with your quit attempt.
Getting started with Nicorette Gum
To get started with Nicorette Gum, be sure to use at least 9 pieces of Nicorette a day for the first six weeks of your quit. Don’t eat or drink 15 minutes before or while you’re chewing Nicorette. It is important to complete treatment. If you feel you need to use the NRT products such as Nicorette or NicoDerm for a longer period to keep from smoking, talk to your health care provider.

Getting started with Nicorette Lozenges or mini Lozenges
When your quit day arrives, start using Nicorette Lozenges or mini lozenges by placing it in your mouth and allowing it to dissolve. Do not chew or swallow the lozenge. The medicine continues to work even after the lozenge is gone. Like Nicorette gum, it’s important to avoid eating or drinking anything for 15 minutes before or while you’re using Nicorette lozenges. Even mildly acidic food and beverages can inhibit nicotine absorption into your bloodstream.

Like any medicine, NicoDerm CQ patches work the best when you use them correctly. Here are some tips to using the patch properly:
- Apply a new patch every 24 hours
- Place the patch on a different part of your skin every day to prevent irritation
- Place the patch in a spot that’s clean, dry and hairless.
- After you remove the backing from the patch, press it onto your skin immediately and hold for ten seconds.
- Save the pouch for disposing the patch after you use it.
